I’m Here to Save the Human Race
And most importantly, Earth.
A month ago, my blog acquaintance Spazoid sent me a link through MSN Messenger. It dealt with our impending doom – excessive consumption and very little resources for a planet that is projected to have 10 billion humans by 2050. It’s a topic that I’ve studied and presented to my fellow students in my Environmental Science class.
I think every one should be aware of this challenge we face. Hopefully, this little movie will help influence people to see the world in a more enlightened perspective. I’m not saying to give up on certain self indulgence immediately; I am saying we should try to do the best we can to be aware of the situation and do little things that can, potentially, help out.
Otherwise, we should prepare to invade and reap the benefits of Mars.
Please sit back, relax, and enjoy the film.

I actually liked the video alot. Whenever I hear or read “overpopulation” I think of the fact that consumption is sometimes ignored in the discussion. Thomas Malthus, a person who promoted the idea of overpopulation (the idea that there are or will be too many people) sometimes praised wealth people who had few children. These people lived in a manor and were some of the biggest consumers of their time but he cheered them on because he wasn’t an environmentalist and they didn’t have many children.
The predictions are that there will be between 9 and 11 billion people in the future (and then population growth will level off/stop). I’m not worried about that. I am worried that many will be join the consumer system the woman in the video talked about that treats people badly and encourages both waste and pollution. The consumption, waste, and pollution levels right now are what is doing most the environmental damage. And those aren’t related to the number of people (not everyone is a consumer) but if they join the consumption/pollution system. People concerned about overpopulation sometimes miss or downplay the true importance and damage of the consumption system. Don’t miss it yourself.
